Half-Elf (Drow) Soulknife Rogue
Wanted to play a skill monkey face for my next character. While eloquence bard may be more optimal, soulknife rogue isn't far behind. Not to mention I was more inspired by the fantasy it offers. Particularly in terms of flavoring my character as having an unfair advantage in social encounters due to being able to read minds. Mechanically of course this is just the reliable talent feature in conjunction with expertise in all three face skills.
Starting stats (point buy) and their progression:
- Str: 8
- Con: 14
- Dex: 17 -> 18 (lvl 4 skill expert feat) -> 20 (lvl 8 ASI)
- Int: 8
- Wis: 12
- Cha: 15 -> 16 (lvl 10 telekinetic feat)
The remaining ASIs past lvl 10 would probably just be dumped into constitution.
As for why half-elf (drow), mechanically it's chosen for the two additional skill proficiencies as well as darkvision. But flavor wise it's chosen to explain the character's psionic power set. For drow and mind flayers both inhabit the underdark and there are numerous occasions in canon forgotten realms lore where they interact and overlap. Particularly the noble drow family House Oblodra who actually obtained mind flayer esque powers through experimentation. This character would therefore be a scion of that fallen house.
All in all, I think this character synergizes mechanics and flavor perfectly. For example, while most drow based characters would have extra difficulty living on the surface, this character is so busted at face skills they'd have no trouble passing the constant vibe checks from NPCs. Especially since they're only half drow and thus don't have to suffer the headache that is sunlight sensitivity.
