My Single Belief About "Fixing" 2014 Rangers

5th Edition

I thought about this again because of the recent post about someone wanting to play a ranger and wondering about the broader resistance to it. I also have almost no feelings about class mechanics as they relate to power and efficacy, beyond what is written right in front of me. My playstyle is "make what you want from the tools that you have, negotiate with your DM as desired, be driven by character first." (Also I skimmed for any Posts about this and didn't find any on the first results page, but loved seeing the ranger advocacy that did come up.)

All of that preamble out of the way, I have a minimally-investigated belief that Rangers would be more wildly accepted if they recovered spells at short rests.

Their access to magic is already limited in a way that I think makes people ask what the point of having it even is, and I think that rangers as characters demand a creative investment and effort to find the power fantasy, heroic good guy (or becoming good, in many cases) in them that you don't have to dig in for quite so much with anyone else.

What do you think? Am I missing something?

As a personal anecdote: somewhat recently, I played a Gloom Stalker in Strahd who took over Barovia as a sort of apathetic paragon of justice. My own qualities of "I'll end this with my bare hands if I have to" was a fun foil to the warlock frequently taking rests, and played well into my preference to use the resources I have and continuously recalibrating for new solutions when those resources change (like my access to magic between rests) rather than holding onto resources for the singular type of solution I have.
