Why do people like dark romance books?

I’m genuinely trying to understand the allure of them, not judging at all. Everyone I know loves them. That’s all my friends read and they recommend them to me, but I do not enjoy reading about triggering stuff like that. I read to escape the bad stuff in the world, not read more about it. R@pe, abuse, non-consensual stuff is not romantic to me.

So what is it you like about it? Is it the thrill of reading something sort of “taboo” or whatever? Is it truly romantic to you? Just trying to understand why so many people love it.
