99% of the relationships in Nanatsu No Taizai/Seven Deadly Sins are wrong for ZERO reason.
I’ve just started re-watching Seven Deadly Sins. The first time I watched it I was around 9-10, and now I’m in my 20s, so back then the relationship stuff kind of went over my head.
But now, looking at the show? There are like.. three relationships total that aren’t fucked-up lolicon fantasies.
Worst offender, right off the bat: Ban and Elaine. Ban met Elaine when she was canonically a child, called her a child on multiple occasions, and mistook an actual child for being her. It’s so weird to me seeing them suck face and have so many moments when Elaine barely looks to be older than ten. And the fact that Elaine can choose to look grown up, but doesn’t feels like the writer telling us “I like little girls!!!! Hahaha nothing u can do!!”
Second offender: King and Diane. I feel like this one isn’t mentioned enough, but King essentially groomed Diane. He found her, when she was a child and he was an adult, when she was all alone and he was her only friend. And then he fell in love with her while she was a child and then promised to love her forever when he left. Very weird. And honestly there was no reason to make them fall in love then. They could’ve had a cute friendship arc and then met up again and fell in love as TWO LEGAL ADULTS. Another thing I find icky is that for majority of the series, King looks like a little boy.
Third offender: Ban and Jericho. People like to put blame on Ban for their relationship, but IMO he didn’t do much wrong in the relationship besides the whole strip thing… odd but not too bad. What I found icky was Jericho going after Ban and Elaine’s SON. Like…. Um. Ew?? No??
Fourth offender: Vivian and Gil. I know they technically aren’t canon, but Vivian canonically has watched Gil grow up and was in love with him as a grown ass woman while he was a little boy, and on multiple occasions has done extremely bad things in the name of her love, like transforming into that ice power man and trying to slip him a love potion. She would have raped him had she got that love potion into his system.
Fifth offender: Meliodas and Elizabeth. Their overall relationship isn’t too shabby and honestly has some nice moments, but I hate the fact that she’s sixteen in her current form. Why??!?????! They could’ve easily just made her.. a legal adult. But no, underage girls are ALL the rage.
Sixth offender and potentially worse than Ban and Elaine: Guila and Gowther. Not only did Gowther mess with her memory for no reason, he is implied to have raped her at some point in the manga. This plot was altogether unnecessary and very weird, and added basically nothing to the story except making me dislike Gowther.
Overall, I dislike a majority of the pairings in this story.
TLDR: The relationships in SDS are weird and written to be fetish content purposely.
