What was Medieval Christianity like before the reformation?

So from what I read Medieval Christianity pre reformation in Western Europe placed an even bigger focus on the veneration of saints then Catholicism does today with stuff like the cult Thomas Becket, most people only went to mass once a year and mass was more of a public gathering/ ritual where the priest prayed on behalf of his congregants rather then to give a sermon or preach to them about the Bible
