Anatomy of a Survivor Who Was Never Saved”
I am a house with the lights on and no one home. A smile nailed to the doorframe, a laugh rehearsed like a lie told often enough it begins to sound true.
Inside— everything is broken furniture and dust.
My body is a battlefield everyone else walked away from. Bones that learned surrender, nerves that scream long after the war ended. I don’t walk— I negotiate with pain. I don’t rest— I bargain.
My mind is a crowded room where hope never gets a chair. Every memory sharpens its teeth. Every mirror asks, What good are you now?
My spirit? Picked clean. Used like spare change in someone else’s pocket. I was adopted like an accessory— a moral trophy, a social ladder, proof someone else was good.
I was loved the way people love tools.
For what I could give. For how I could look. For the money, the ride, the usefulness. Never for the soft, unseen thing that was me.
I don’t know what parental love feels like. Don’t know the weight of blood choosing blood. Romantic love is a language I only know as a rumor— a song leaking through walls I was never invited past.
Touch has always come with conditions. Affection with a receipt.
Now I am still here, somehow— a miracle nobody claps for. No income. No future anyone can point to and say, There. That’s where he’s going.
Just a man stitched together with stubbornness and scars, asking the universe how much more it plans to take.
Because I am tired. Tired in my marrow. Tired in places sleep can’t reach.
I want happiness without apology. A body that doesn’t betray me every morning. Love that doesn’t ask, What can you do for me first?
I want to matter without proving my worth in pain.
Sometimes I think about quitting— not dying, just disappearing from the effort. From caring. From hoping.
And still— I breathe. Still I wake up. Still I fight a world that has never fought for me.
If this is weakness, why does it take so much strength to remain?
If I am worthless, why does it hurt so badly to be unseen?
All I ever wanted was to be loved without earning it.
Tell me— is that really too much for a human being to ask?
