Long haul flights with flared asthma (after being sick) - advice? Anxiety is high!

Hi! I am going on a long haul flight for my honeymoon soon. I have never flown longer than 3 hours before.

I have recently had a chest infection (dry cough, sore chest, itchy throat, some phlegm, a wheeze at night and mornings, and the dreaded blocked nose) I've used my rescue salamol inhaler twice as the emergency doctor I visited said it is okay to take whenever needed when sick. Got steroids (corticosteroid) for the chest too though I havent' started yet - they make me very jittery lol and i am anxious already.

I visited another doctor today just to be sure before I fly as I am still terrified about flying in recycled dry air with my asthma flared up and nose still iffy. She said once I take the corticosteroid steroids, and have my inhaler on board with me, I should be okay and I am fine to fly based on how she saw me today (unless i suddenly feel very out of breath)

  • (I cannot take my preventer inhaler right now as I had a bad reaction to it a few weeks ago, chest went super tight after 1 puff. So odd. Beclazone, been on it all my life. Waiting on a prescription for a new preventer, mixes both prevention and rescue in one. Hopefully will grab that before the trip this weekend to help!)

Also I find it very hard to differentiate a panic attacks/anxietys chest tightness with asthma and whether I need the rescue inhaler. Example: Had some kind of an 'attack' a few weeks ago while in a store. Felt short of breath but not gasping, tight chest, numb hands, shaking, dizzy. I took the rescue inhaler (1 puff) and felt so much worse, I thought I was going to die from an 'asthma attack' - husband informed me it sounded much more like panic than asthma because I was talking through it all. But this is a fear too, that I will need my inhaler on board/on trip and not realise it!

Basically, I am worried about this flight (will have a facemask on) with my sinuses and asthma flaring up and wheezing sometimes. I find airplane air to be very dry even on those 3 hr flights, let alone 11! I will also find it hard to differentiate my inevitable panic attack with asthma :( (This isn't a trip we can change or reschedule either)

Most family I have been talking to recently (not asthmatics) have said the corticosteroid steroids will do the trick, flight attendants have first aid training, and I will be fine and that I am worsening myself with the stress of panicking before I've even gotten to an airport. The doctor today also pushed this too - that it is flared asthma and dried irritated airways, steroids should work, and i need to try enjoy myself because it's my honeymoon. Emergency doc said very similar. I even splurged on a blood oxygen reader (oximeter) and then realised the blood oxygen % can't tell me if i'm having asthma issues loool.

What do you do to help yourself on flights? Any advice? Also how do you differentiate panic attack with asthma attack? :(

Sorry for the ramblings and anxiety. I just figured maybe someone here might understand or have a tip.
