Stripping plastic residue

I was drying and liking my griddle and accidentally left my burner on. It wasn’t high heat so nothings damaged, but I put a towel down on it to brush away some random stuff that had fallen on the surface. The towel stuck immediately and upon nearly instant removal left a pattern on the surface of griddle.

I’ve scrubbed, even with steel wool, and the polyester residue is still there. Is that a lye removal thing or do I need a different system?
