Tinnitus, menstrual cycle, and birth control
Has anyone else had tinnitus linked to their menstrual cycle that resolved with hormonal birth control?
I've had tinnitus in my right ear for about four months now, and I noticed the intensity was clearly tied to my menstrual cycle—really loud during certain parts, basically gone during others. Stress seemed to trigger it initially, but the cyclical pattern was undeniable.
I just started Slynd (drospirenone, a progestin-only pill) four days ago for endometriosis, and my tinnitus is completely gone.
When I looked into it, I found some research showing that estrogen and progesterone receptors exist in the inner ear, and hormonal fluctuations can affect the auditory system. There's even a study on drospirenone specifically helping with Meniere's symptoms in women who had premenstrual flare-ups. But most of the research focuses on menopause/HRT, and I haven't found much about premenopausal women using birth control to treat cyclical tinnitus.
Has anyone else experienced this? Either noticing your tinnitus fluctuates with your cycle, or finding relief after starting hormonal treatment? I'm curious if this is more common than the research suggests and just isn't being talked about.
(For context: I'm dealing with some adjustment side effects from the Slynd like morning anxiety and occasional palpitations, but the tinnitus relief has been immediate and significant.)
