The way she talks about “blocking out criticism” honestly says more than she probably realizes. To me, this isn’t just about protecting her mental health it reads like justification after the fact. What stands out is that she became Glinda everywhere else to including real life. Bleached hair, exaggerated softness, constant fragility, the babying of her image, all of it feels like an extension of the role rather than a performance with boundaries. That makes it very easy to deflect criticism with “I’m just a committed artist” instead of engaging with valid concerns about casting, performance, or image.

I’ve genuinely never seen an actor struggle this much to return to their baseline after a role. Even actors who went through extreme transformations , Joaquin Phoenix with *Joker* being the obvious example, eventually returned to themselves but her transformation bled into her identity, her public behavior, her appearance, and even how fans are trained to respond to criticism. Any pushback gets reframed as cruelty toward a fragile, misunderstood artist rather than normal discourse around a massive, high-profile role i think that’s a lack of separation between character and self, and it’s fair to question it — especially when the result is an image that feels manufactured to shield her from accountability rather than invite honest discussion.

Is It Commitment or Identity Collapse?
