My Commentary on the Kdrama "Duty After School"- Ep 1,2,3
Hello there! I remember reading the webtoon quite some time ago and not finishing it. I just couldn't get into it. It was the art, maybe? Idk. But I love survival typa shows (All of Us are Dead is my absolute favorite), so here I am! Hope this Kdrama is good.
(I am going to be updating this post as and when I complete watching the episodes...can't guarantee consistency-LMAO this is what I said, but I ended up binge-watching the whole thing TT)
Episode 1
Why did they just leave the spheres like that? In the real world, I believe that if shooting at them didn't work, they'd try all sorts of methods to study all they can about them.>!ah they're already doing this!< And at the first sign of them being hostile erupts, in a more believable setting, one of them would be captured and tortured until a method to defeat them is discovered.
I love that the kids act like normal teenagers. No extreme bullying, and a normal depiction of their behavior and friendships. Though Bo Ra is mean acts like a typical bully, I feel like she's a strong character.
Luminaria is the perfect word to describe those spheres.
Tae Man is endearing for some reason. Though he's nasty, stinky and dirty, I feel like he's a genuine character. He's cute. :P
I did NOT expect them to kill off Young Hoon just like that. I expected him to be saved or a side character dying first. It is a reflection of modern society where some parents drill into their children that studying is the only thing that matters. It is so sad that he couldn't enjoy playing games. But I suppose this is how it would happen in the real world as well. There is no plot armor, no prediction as to who will die when. Deaths can be in vain too.
Episode 2
This shows the power of modern digital communication. When stripped of their voice, those of the general public that knew what was happening couldn't warn others, and the students, with no access to their phones, were as good as deaf. IRL though, I think the government would prefer to incite fear into the stupid public to make sure they don't endanger themselves, spreading awareness about the danger of those alien spheres and the Things that emerge from them. Or they'd pretend as if everything is manageable until things get out of hand and THEN warn the people. Yeah, I suppose this is more realistic.
In a realistic setting, I don't think this would have happened. Drones would be utilized (or at least tried) Soldiers disobeying orders and leaving the civilians by themselves???? I mean, one of them could have gone to search for the two boys while the other stayed on guard? And, is the teacher stupid? Doesn't she realize that she would be endangering all the other kids when she decides to search for the two guys on her own (with the Class President?) But I do have to applaud her, she cares for her students so, so much, evident till her very last breath. But MAN! I did not expect her to be killed off so soon. I expected we would lose one of the kids who went to the convenience store.
Do people's brain freeze so much that they can't realize that the sound is what might be attracting the dime a dozen of those Things? At least one of the girls could have thought of it.
Episode 3
The kid who took initiative and led the way out of the parking lot is a brave leader! Also, quick thinking, Runner-up! (that's what I'm gonna call the nerdy guy who was in second place in his class), it was smart, catching the Thing in that bucket.
BRO!! I was so scared that the girl would end up shooting him instead of the Thing!!
The two guys in the convenience store...well, to be fair even I'd be quite curious and giggling the first time I see the Thing. Locking it in the freezer works?? I think you're onto something! They could use freeze guns to defeat the alien-Things. But alas they don't have the liberty of leisure time to be thinking about such plans. Some of these guys' crying looks so fake btw.
Ae Sol is a menace, please protect her from herself and don't give her any guns. I feel bad for her, man. Not everybody is suited to be a warrior.
This is such an evil society. Holding the imaginary CSAT as leverage? The outside world must definitely be knowing what's happening (the world is in danger). Why are there no parents demanding their children to be sent back to them? Ah- maybe they are already dead, if not already at the shelter-if there is one. How stupid do the kids have to be to believe that after all that's happening, CSAT won't be cancel- wait, we didn't have a zero year though covid was rampant. So, yeah, there was a possibility of the CSATs being held, I guess.
Welp, I wrote the above paragraph too soon. I know now.
Umm.. they could've just asked the platoon leader to show proof that they are in shelters. ARE THEY SERIOUSLY GOING OUT WITH NO GUNS IN THEIR HANDS???? ah thank goodness they got caught. Ingenious plan, white-glasses guy, firing up the other students.
Kim Chi is the sweetest guy.
Each episode has me like, "What the fuuuuck" >!everybody dies in ep3 after their failed mutiny as the spheres decide to drop down like flies and attack everybody!<
Episode 4
What have we learnt about them?
- Their screeches alert other Things and spheres of their location.
- They seem to attack based on noise mainly, and possibly sight. Well yes, definitely sight too. >!YES I WAS THINKING IT COULDN'T BE JUST THAT!! HEAT SIGNATURES!!!<
- That Thing seemed to have perished in the refrigerator back at that convenience store.
- They just go for the kill (intelligent? They know who and where to attack) and they don't eat the entire body (sorry)
- The spheres congregate in places with high population (the scientists should have realized that earlier)
-
!They are much more intelligent than we think, they do scouting and communicate via lights!<
It's gotta be such a scary situation, when you are running for shelter and don't know where it will be safe, not even sure if the people you know have managed to escape as well.
If you have some health condition, say asthma, or diabetes, and you have no shots left, bye. Food and water are luxuries. If you are injured, bye in a few hours.
What about the animals????
What happens to dangerous people in prisons?
Well, we have all sorts of people here. The leaders, the ones who mess up, the whiners, the doers, the rebels, the healers, the ones who give up, the ones who run away, the traitors, the moms.
....Do soldiers not use walkie-talkies? Also, white-glasses guy is the smartest of them all, leaving behind marks for others to locate them.
WHY IS NOBODY THERE IN THAT HOUSE? LIQUID NITROGEN? I THINK THAT'S THE KEY TO KILLING THE ALIENS! Butane gas? what???????? Idk, does a serial killer/ cannibal live there?
Ummm kids, that's illogical, you shouldn't go. You'd just be a burden to him. Just do as you're told, stay put.
NO, Jung Soo!!!! You're useful. Not expendable. *cough* like some others *cough* but yeah, you can't trust the others to do it well...Hee Rak, you're the He-Ro. Why didn't you bring the liquid nitrogen can with you? Never let your guard down.
All's well that ends well.
Episode 5
"We're all suffering as we're trying" -No Ra
I wonder how a book written from the POV of No Ae Sol would look like. Would Bo Ra be a villain?
I am a deeply mistrusting person. I don't think anybody else is alive let alone taking the CSAT.
I feel so bad for the Class President. Guys, she's new to this too, even she's just a student like y'all.
The Cola ammo, LMAO
Why not bring nitrogen ammo with them?
Episode 6
Surviver girl 1, why are you staring at him like that? It's creepy. Gosh she's suffering frm PTSD, she shouldn't have been left alone.
The most devastating blow. Gone with the blast (sorry)
His was a heroic death. Painful to watch him fighting off the aliens, trying his best to survive and escape when I knew that he'd die because of the ominous shot of his helmet being left behind.
Class Prez is very responsible to her duty. She's very much dependable.
"The time we spent today is a gift from friends, teachers and sergeant that left before us."-Class Prez
"Every man to his trade"-Bo Ra's friend
"Everyone's going to stick to their groups"-Ae Sol
Episode 7
Everybody's friends with Tae Man :)
Haha, the Soo Cheol here is handsome too! (the other one being Hong Soo Cheol from Queen of Tears)
Healer girl is so cute.
Bribery here too, huh?
What about the other 3 rescued students? They're nowhere to be seen?
This whole episode feels like the calm before the storm.
Episode 8
I expected to see prisoners, but not at a hospital. Oh wait, is it the penitentiary? DON'T RESCUE THEM, GUYS!!!! THEY WERE LOCKED UP FOR A REASON. YOU CAN'T GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY IF YOU RELEASE THEM.
Episode 9
I've been binge-watching this and so engrossed that I forgot where exactly ep 8 started and ended.
GUYS DON'T TAKE YOUR GUNS ANYWHERE NEAR THEM, DON'T BE FUCKING STUPID. NO AE SOL DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID.
GUYS DON'T LEAVE THAT IDIOT ALONE. BITCH, YOU ANNOYING CHILD, I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU. YEAH, TAKE AND OFFER A GUN TO A DANGEROUS CRIMINAL, WHY DON'T YOU?
Bo Ra has a brain. That girl doesn't. She's a lost cause. She's too soft for this world. You guys could kill off all those criminals before they kill her and if Ae sol had even half a brain, she would dodge the bullet aimed at her head. They just have 1 gun.
This might be the most disturbing Kdrama I have ever watched. Like Hellbound. Especially because I'm documenting it like this.
I hope they removed ammo before handing them the guns.
That mafia man seems to be good. And he's good looking. Yayy, I was right.
Bully her but take a bullet for her. Be like Bora.
How did Soo Cheol die??
Why did the Science school students not try and meet the rest of the students?
By the way, where is his camera? Is it possible that it would've captured something? Argh is it time for the internal conflicts and suspicions and possible betrayal now? GUYS! Secrets are how misunderstandings start, which in turn lead to fights!
Hehhhhh this is so weird. Why not let everyone know about the CSATs? Y'all could've discussed what to do. Especially Kwon Il-ha who doesn't care for it? Why? Also, rigging votes would come out one day or the other. Still does not explain how and why Soo Cheol died though. Ah, now I kind of get them. From one extreme measures person to another. But what about Soo Cheol?
I feel bad for Runner-up. He left his family and came just for those extra points for the CSAT. His monologue is so heart-touching. "Poverty is tougher than war"
"Compared to when we first grabbed our rifles, how much will we have changed by now? All we did was barely survive every day, and we were already turning 20 soon. What awaits us at the end of this road? If we safely make it home, can we go back to how we were before we used these rifles?"
Episode 10
!Why we are so outnumbered, you ask? Well, one of our teammates went batshit crazy and killed everyone!!<
Based on reddit reviews, I think everyone's gonna die.
Um, guys, amusement parks make a hell lot of noise, right? It's best not to risk it.
I can't even enjoy it because I'm so anxious LMAO. This show was NOT good for my anxiety.
Guys, first focus on saving the girl!!!! I thought Runner-up acting out would be out of character, but it makes sense, sadly. He's gone senile after hearing after hearing about the one thing that was actually keeping him sane.
"Why did we choose such a boring ride for the finale?- Tae Man
Why? It's not that bad. We're going in circles, so no one wins, or gets overtaken.- Cho Young Sin (White-glasses guy)"
Kwon Il-ha. The hot-headed, but sane guy. You will be missed.
Bruh, why not tell the whole gang that this guy murdered him???? Why risk it?
Runner-up is a psychopath. Jung Soo, nooooooooo! Seriously???? What the FUCK? SHIBALSENKYA???? They all survived the spheres just to be killed by this shitbag? Well, handing out arms to hormonal teenagers is bound to have some unprecedented consequences, but this is next level! If it ruined your life, die by yourself. You do not have the right to take away others'.
It was a really nice point that CSAT isn't a war that we are competing against each other for, it is something we must overcome with our friends. "Were those extra points really worth it?" Yes, because society is structured in a way that our future lives are drafted at this particular singularity. But that's just in an idealistic world. Young Hoon's words are true for most people-"useful friends are made at college". But that's just the lucky ones not for someone like me who peaked high school, LMAO And it's not true always though. Our childhood friends turn out to be a special part of us.
Haha, "it's of no use. Girls change after they go to college" LMAO, Young Hoon.
That's so cute, the boys protecting the girls. From the eyes of the teachers when they wore make-up and later in army camp, when they sneaked off to the boys' dormitory.
(If you reached till here, good job! I'm sorry that this post is so messy and contains random blurbs of thoughts rather than a coherent passage. I don't write often. By the way, I have been using reddit for a while now, but have never posted anything, so pardon me if something seems off. I have a habit of binge-watching shows to the point that I can't even remember what I watched except for a blurry outline. All the shows that are similar start to merge together and I can't seem to appreciate them individually. So, I am making this post to change my habits and in the hopes that my watch-time is mindful, LOL)-update-task successfully failed. I ended up binge-watching it because writing down my thoughts hyped me up more.
