Should my other dog be there?
Hi all, for context I have two dogs: Simba (my soul dog - 12 years old) and Darcy (my sweet baby angel pie - 5 years old). Simba and Darcy are what I would classify as a bonded pair (especially on Darcy’s end). Darcy is quite a sensitive soul and is very attached to both Simba and myself.
Simba has entered the late stages of liver failure and I have plans to let her go in 5 days at home. She is still eating and drinking, but she has become quite jaundice, lethargic, and experiencing incontinence and I want to let her go before she suffers any more. My main concern (aside from the heartbreak of losing my soulmate), is whether or not Darcy should be present.
Due to the aftercare plans I have for Simba, I will have to be away from Darcy the 24 hours following Simba’s passing. I plan to do aquamation for Simba and the nearest facility is a 4 hour drive away, so after Simba passes I will be driving her to the facility and staying in a hotel that night before returning home. Darcy will be spending that night at my parents’ house.
The vet coming over to let Simba go recommended that Darcy see Simba after she passes, however I’m just worried that Darcy seeing Simba after her passing, and then me immediately leaving and being away from Darcy for a day might be too traumatic for her (she’s very sensitive!). Even as it stands now, Darcy is incredibly stressed out due to Simba’s condition and she knows something is wrong. I’ve even considered sending her to my parents’ house for the next few days until Simba’s passing because watching Simba in her current condition is causing Darcy a lot of stress. I’m so torn!
Thoughts???
