Installation without virtualization or dedicated hardware?

I'd really like to install Home Assistant in an existing environment without having to fiddle with Docker or VMs.

Am I just missing something or am I about to get "why would you want to do that?"ed (please save your breath.)

Those solutions are just too opaque for me to be comfortable with.
