Can I laminate ply to solid boards?

I'm thinking about making a bed from walnut. To save significant money, can I laminate 1/4 walnut ply to quarter sawn red oak for the bed rails or will expansion of the red oak stress the ply too much? I'm thinking the rails will be 8 inches wide. Thanks!
