parking tips for chicago blackhawks vs. boston bruins at united center (chicago 01/17)

hey everyone, with the blackhawks playing the bruins on 01/17 at 7:00 pm, figured i'd share a few parking tips because getting in and out of the united center can be a total nightmare, especially on a monday night with all that weekday traffic mixing with the game crowd.

honestly, the best way to skip the traffic jam and avoid the craziness is checking out an app like prked. it's a newer thing where you can rent out private driveways or garages right next to the arena for way cheaper than the official lots. you park, walk a short distance, and you completely bypass the miles-long lines waiting to get into the main lots. it’s a huge time saver.

if you prefer the standard route, the united center has about 12 official surface lots surrounding the venue. they typically open 2 to 2.5 hours before the 7:00 pm game, so aim for around 4:30 pm or 5:00 pm. it's way cheaper if you pre-purchase a pass through ticketmaster or spothero-official passes start at $22-$24 for most lots, but can jump up to $29-$40 if you pay on-site,,. just remember they have a strict no-tailgating policy, and there are no in-and-out privileges,.

for a cheaper spot that doesn't require pre-booking an official lot, you can check apps like spothero or parkwhiz for third-party lots a little further away. you can sometimes snag a spot for $10 to $17 about a half-mile away, but that’s going to be a 15-20 minute walk, which is fine if the weather holds up,.

the biggest warning i have is about street parking. they have heavily restricted parking on event days in the near west side. a huge zone is now tow-away, essentially from lake street down to jackson boulevard, and from ashland avenue all the way to western avenue. the city is super aggressive about ticketing and towing in this area, which can cost you $200+. if you see a spot, assume it's permit-only and check every single sign carefully. it’s almost not worth the risk for this venue.

to avoid driving entirely, the cta is a solid bet. the #20 madison bus runs right past the arena, and the #19 united center express bus runs before and after games to union station and downtown. the green line (damen stop) and blue line (illinois medical district) are within walking distance, but it is a bit of a hike, especially in january. rideshares like uber/lyft are also super convenient; they have a dedicated uber zone at madison and wood street, but be warned about insane dynamic pricing spikes right after the final horn.

aim to arrive around 5:30 pm or 6:00 pm to give yourself a full hour to get parked and through security without rushing. the traffic gets really busy on madison and damen closer to game time.

hope this helps you have a smooth trip to the madhouse on madison! go hawks!
