Practical/Clinical experience at UCL med/UK medical schools
Hi everyone!
I’m considering applying to UCL for medicine as an international student and wanted to get a realistic idea of what the clinical years are like, especially in terms of practical, hands-on experience.
- When do the clinical years start at UCL?
- How much time do you spend on the wards vs teaching?
- How hands-on are students compared to other systems like Latin America and the US?
Specifically, are medical students allowed (under supervision, of course) to:
- Place IV cannulas / do venepuncture?
- Insert urinary catheters (Foleys)?
- Assist in surgeries (scrub in, retract, close, etc.)?
- Assist in deliveries or do basic OB procedures?
I understand that UK medical schools are generally more structured and less autonomous than some Latin American programs or the US, but I’d love to know what students are realistically allowed to do.
Thank you!!
