AIO with how I handle food safety issues in our household?
I live with my partner. We’re both in our late 20s.
In our house, I do all the kitchen-related chores, including cooking, dishwashing, and deep cleaning. If I’m not the one to do those chores, it’s because I’m either sick or not home. This is a mutual choice for multiple reasons (one of which is the topic of this post) but overall, our workload is split pretty equally. For example, they’re the one who does ALL cat-related duties, including feeding, scooping litter, administering medicine, etc.
One of those chores is deep cleaning the cats’ litter boxes. Usually, this is done in our backyard with soap and a hose…but I recently came downstairs and saw it being done in our kitchen sink.
With clean dishes drying in a rack less than 6 inches away.
And uncovered food less than a foot away.
AND the second, dirty litter box sitting in our dining room.
When I pointed all of this out, their response was “no worries, I’ll wipe the counters down and put everything away when I’m done!”…and, IMO, using a single disinfectant wipe on two of our four counters and ignoring all the other issues is NOT thorough enough :/
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first food safety concern I’ve had. Every time they cook dinner, they leave raw meat packets on the counter and are content with leaving it there until after we eat…which can be up to 2 hours after the meal was prepped. (A few other concerns: they don’t don’t seal most plastic containers or bags completely, and they’ll often cut raw meat and other items on the same cutting board, in that order, without any cleaning in between.)
It’s just rough because, every time we talk about it, it becomes a lose-lose situation. I’d prefer to clean it myself, since I understand the type of cleaning needed to mitigate risk…but they’d prefer to clean it themselves to fix their mistake and learn how to do it correctly. Unfortunately, though, I’m hesitant to trust ‘em to clean it well based on previous instances…and they always get upset when I try to help and/or teach ‘em the right way to do it.
So, I’m not sure what to do here :( re-cleaning afterwards (which is what I usually do) leads to more frustration on both ends, and it just doesn’t seem feasible or sustainable to do that every time. I’d rather be frustrated and clean than frustrated and at risk, though, so…I’d probably keep doing it. Unless that seems like an overreaction? If so, what else can I do?
