Estrogen as a trigger and my experience on Slynd (estrogen-free birth control that lowers your own estrogen)
I’m diagnosed with MCAS and my symptoms flare way more when my estrogen fluctuates during the cycle: during ovulation and when my period is ending (I also get aura migraines in this part of the cycle). I can’t do estrogen because of the migraines and when I tried birth control with bioidentical estrogen (considered safer regarding strokes but studies on this matter are still ongoing) it triggered what seemed like an infinite, extremely traumatic episode that took me to the hospital with tachycardia (155 bpm), palpitations, erratic blood pressure and swelling.
So here it comes Slynd: it’s an estrogen-free birth control which actually LOWERS estrogen (it gets on the same level as in your early follicular phase, the lowest it gets during your cycle and luckily, that’s when I have almost no symptoms at all). I started taking it on the third day of my period so I was already feeling like my estrogen was increasing and causing symptoms (including ovarian pain, the kind you feel when your body is recruiting follicles and preparing for ovulation). The first week on Slynd was hell. Hives, dermatographism, itchiness all over, breathlessness, tiredness, migraines, exercise intolerance, GI issues etc. However, it takes time for estrogen to stabilize on the pill. It’s not instant and it takes days to weeks. It can actually take up to a few months for complete hypothalamus-hypophysis-ovaries suppression. So I kept taking it and now everything is GONE except for some mild migraine which is probably from the adaptation period that can last for 6 months.
I’m now hoping my estrogen stabilizes on the next few months and I get less symptoms than my natural cycles used to cause me. I literally couldn’t sleep during ovulation, I felt so wired and anxious, had palpitations, blood pressure issues, gut issues, adrenaline surges etc. I feel a tiny bit of hope now.
