Help me choose, please and thanks!

I'm on an extremely limited budget as a student. I'm hoping to pick up either a Mossberg Maverick 88, or a Savage Axis XP (scope bundle) in .223. Both end up at about $320 all said and done. I live in a suburban/rural area. My main need is cheap practice/stockpile ammo, which both have. I currently have a .44 lever action (thinking about selling), and a 10/22. What makes sense to you guys? Any other suggestions?
