I Saw My Dog Do Something She’s Never Done, and I Don’t Know How to Feel About It
I live alone in an upstairs apartment, and ever since I got my American Eskimo, Lucy (2 Years Old) I taught her one unbreakable rule: she can go up the stairs, but never down them. Not once. Not ever. It wasn’t because she’s aggressive. Lucy couldn’t hurt a fly. But she can be a bully if she senses fear, but run away the moment she realizes that it's actually real and not a game or play. Some of my neighbors kids are scared of her. And she's scared of them too. I was afraid she’d wander downstairs when I wasn’t home and scare someone. Maybe even someone outside. So since when she was a puppy, I carried her down for walks, for pee breaks, for play. There was an invincible barrier at the edge of my stairs. And she followed completely. Every time I came back from being out—sometimes I don’t even lock my door—Lucy would be waiting at the edge of the stairs, right at the boundary she never crossed. Shaking. Panting. Eyes locked on me. She has a bit of separation anxiety, so she’d be almost feverish with excitement, like she’d been holding herself together just long enough for me to return. It was adorable tbh.
Now being the darling she is, Lucy usually gets visitors. And recently, it's been a couple of neighborhood kids. Sometimes they come by on Saturdays when I’m outside working out or watching my friends play soccer. Sometimes in the evenings when I step out for a walk or a quick bite. They were here just yesterday (mind you, I work from home, and my doors are always open because I get guests, and I'm just like that). Today, I was downstairs, heading back up. And that’s when I saw her. Lucy came trotting down the stairs, tentatively, with a grin on her face, almost like showing me her new toy. I froze. She froze too. For a split second we just stared at each other –then she turned around and bolted back upstairs, still smiling. I didn’t know how to react. It wasn’t anger. It wasn’t fear. It was something stranger. It felt like seeing your child do something grown-up for the first time—something they weren’t supposed to do yet—and realizing they can. That they’re capable. That the world you tried to contain for them is bigger than you thought. It’s been a couple of hours now. She hasn’t gone downstairs again. She hasn’t acted out. She’s been her usual sweet self. But I keep thinking about that moment. About how proud she looked. About how rules, no matter how long they’ve held, can quietly expire without asking permission. And now I’m wondering—not just whether I can trust her to stay upstairs… …but whether I’m ready to stop pretending she’s still small enough to need that rule at al
