This meta is actually very fun. More players need to learn how to go second
I see so many doom posts on here all the time. While I understand the frustration in the game during peak Maliss format, the game has moved on so much since then. First of all, going second and not opening a charmy/roach is not an auto loss all the time unless your deck is bad, full stop.
What makes a deck good right now is not about ceiling, any garbage rogue deck can make an unbreakable board (looking at you synchron). So I get confused when people complain about how strong yummy mitsu or even maliss boards are, the endboards have not gotten stronger. For years Yugioh has been like this.
When it comes to hand traps, yes they have gotten worse over time. Good decks can now easily play through multiple hand traps. I think this is actually a good thing, because in turn engines are getting stronger for going first and second.
For example, Paks deck that did well in the DC cup was onomat Ryzeal, his list only had 12 non-engine yet he was still easily winning games going second. Because the Onomat and Ryzeal engines can absolutely break boards. Another example of a deck that is good into boards is any mitsu variant, I played a lot with yummy mitsu and there have been many games I have won by just opening up engine going second. My personal favorite deck right now, Lunalight, also is very good into boards. Dracotail has Faimena. And decks like maliss can run a lot of non-engine.
My point here is that there are a A LOT of good decks in the meta right now that can either break boards or play enough non-engine to the point where going second is not that bad. VSK9 is coming soon and that deck can absolutely go second.
Yugioh is healing and I'm tired of people complaining about it. Ryzeal and maliss meta was awful for going second but now things are so much better
