My “planning” used to make my ADHD worse...
I have ADHD, and the most exhausting part of studying for me isn’t the studying — it’s the starting. I’d open my laptop, see 12 things due, and my brain would do that familiar move: plan harder (new lists, new folders, new “system”)… until I’d burned an hour and still hadn’t begun.
A few weeks ago I had this awful moment: I was sitting with a free 60 minutes, nothing blocking me, and I still couldn’t start. Not because I didn’t care — because my brain treated “pick the right task” like a threat.
What helped was shrinking the “start” into something I couldn’t negotiate with.
I got into Athly’s first beta, and instead of me rewriting my whole week every time life shifted, it pushed me into a super simple rhythm: anchors first (classes/training), then one tiny “starter block” that’s actually doable when my brain is loud. I started doing a “first 10 minutes” setup (open the doc, write 2 bullets, queue the exact page), and suddenly I wasn’t fighting the blank void (I think they are opening second round of beta). Starting got easier — which is the whole battle with ADHD.
I tried many and I was disappointed but this one actually helped me
do you think most ‘productivity systems’ for ADHD are actually just avoidance in a prettier outfit — and if so, what actually helps you start?
