Did I mess up? My soon to be 3 year old still isn’t potty trained.

Potty Training 🚽

Hi,

My boy will be 3 in march. We admittedly have been taking a chill approach with potty training. We bought a potty for the living room six months ago but he treated it like a toy so we assumed he wasn’t developmentally ready.

A week ago we decided it was time to take a firmer approach as I’d love him to be trained by the time his baby brother arrives in the summer. We bought a potty for the toilet and a sticker sheet as well as undies. He was a late talker so only recently is he able to communicate somewhat efficiently, answer questions, etc. so we assumed he is ready. I’m a SAHM for reference but we do tons of reading and activities at home.

He has never communicated having to go but he will sometimes sit on the potty before bath time. He hasn’t peed on it yet though. He wakes up from nap time dry and I try to get him to sit on the potty after but this usually ends in him refusing and getting upset only to pee in his diaper moments later.

I’m not sure what approach to take. We do books, watch the Ms Rachel Potty episode, etc. but nothing is working. Is this too short of time? I see parents all the time talking about potty training in a weekend and I can’t even get him to sit on it! Everywhere I see says not to turn this into a negative experience so I don’t force him to sit. Do we have to ditch diapers a whole weekend for him to get the message? Or is it a development thing?
