Question about making quill pen from feather
I’m wanting to make a feather pen (specifically from a turkey feather) and when looking at demonstrations I’m a little confused about the “tempering” of the pen. By tempering I mean when ppl soak the pen and then bury it in sand after. Some videos show doing or recommend it and others either don’t show it or one even said it’s not worth bothering with.
So to those who have made or make quill pens do you or do you not do the “tempering” process?
Also if you do temper it is there an alternative to using heated sand in the process? If not would putting sand in an old pot or pan on the stove work?
