What is “a while” in hospice terms?

I’m so tired of planning only day to day, 600miles away from my home, my husband, my job, my friends.

Rushed home 2.5 months ago to help Dad on hospice for pancreatic cancer. The hospital gave him a few weeks after a weekend of fever and confusion. Fast forward a month, and he was up and insisting on doing everything for himself. Now today, the only thing I’ve done is make him breakfast and listen to him complain that his life was better in his 20’s.

Hospice came today and looked at us and said it could honestly be a while. Dad is stable, eating, walking, drinking, but miserable. He keeps saying he’ll be gone by the end of the month.

What is “a while” in hospice terms? Are we looking at 6 months? 3?

I feel so guilty, I don’t want to wish him away, but I want my life back. The questions have changed from “you’re where you need to be” to “So, did you like move home or what?”
