Crawl space access

We started working with an architect on an addition to our house. We have a full basement, but the addition is planned to have a crawl space. One thing he did that seemed odd to me: in the initial schematic drawings, he didn't include an entrance to the new crawl space foundation, only vents. When I asked him to add an entrance, he placed it in the existing basement. I thought it should be accessed from the outside.

We don't have plans of using that space, and I am concerned that when opening a basement wall, the foundation will be damaged if they open up a door in it.

I also think it will be an potential entry for pests and harder to isolate.

Intuitively I would prefer an external hatch, with no access from the basement.

I wonder what people with similar project did and which option do you think is the right one?
