Identify Fraud + Missing Return
In 2024, I tried filing taxes but had a note from the IRS for identify fraud stuff, and I was blocked from filing. This is something I’ve been dealing with for almost a decade but between 2020-2023 it really wen nuts with false accounts across the US, and apparently fraudulent filings.
The IRS caught those and it was actually quite helpful. I had to get an appointment with a local office, collect something like 5+ years of filings and all the documents related, prove my identity and they worked with me on everything as well as dropped the fraudulent stuff.
I’m still dealing with disputes outside this, but the IRS was generally very helpful and gave me a likely 2-4(ish) year timeline for resolution.
No problem except for 2023 return. It was cleared and then direct deposited into an account, but it was one of the fraud accounts they helped me remove.
The account is not valid (determined from police report process and the bank in question) so it would have been rejected anyway. The proper return method (check to my now validated address) wast updated in time.
That 2023 return is still sitting in the processing state. Going through the published route to track it gets me no where, and the office I visited has since closed and doesn’t exit (doge maybe?).
Does anyone know how to actually handle this and move these though? I’ve 3 more from 2021, 2020 and 2018, but they have been coming slowly and I could see them moving in the tracking. 2023 is just stuck.
Appreciate any ideas here or experiences others have had.
