Messed up my brakes?

Was driving down the freeway when traffic went from 70 to 40mph. Slammed on my brakes and avoided hitting anyone, but noticed getting off my exit I had to press down on the break pedal more than usual to slow down. What happened to my brakes? Do I need to go to a mechanic?
