Check Deposit Nonsense (So Long C1)

Bank Account

About 10 ago I left Citi and moved everything over to C1 because I had an experience where Citi would have left me stranded overseas with no money despite having banked with them for over a decade, and C1 went out of their way to help me.

They used to be so, so good. So when I moved to Boston, I stayed with them although it sucks that they have so few branches here, I don’t even have an ATM where I live.

Today I deposited a check. The issuer of the check is an insurance company, it was issued this week, the signatures are clear and everything else is printed.

First I receive an email saying the check was accepted. 3 hours later I received another email saying it wasn’t accepted, because the photo wasn’t clear. OK, no problem, let me deposit it again.

When I try to do the deposit again after making sure that the image is perfectly clear and legible, it says “you already deposited this check”.

Well, no. I actually couldn’t, C1. Because you said it wasn’t clear enough. Then it says “if this is a mistake, call us”. So I think “I’ll call them, and I bet they’ll figure this out in a jiffy”. I call them.

The person on the phone informs me of my options: “Ask the person that issued you the check issue you another one”.

Excuse me, what?

Yeah sure, I will just call the insurance company that already took 3 months to cut this check, and tell them I need another one because C1 says so.

Ultimately, I wasn’t able to deposit my check. They can’t fix it. The computer gods can’t be overridden. No sir.

This came after a few other easily preventable inconveniences in the past few months. I’m moving my accounts tomorrow, I’ve had it.

Why am I posting this here, then? Because I’d switched over to C1 because they demonstrated an outstanding ability to solve problems 10 years ago. They went above and beyond for me, despite lack of a long relationship. How you get from there to here, I don’t know. But I hoped someone from C1 would see this here and realize that they are dropping the ball.
