On AMA Expectations and Fair Evaluation

Opinion / Discussion

While the damage is done with CBC's initial framing and messaging, I think members of the NDP sub should re-consider the Rob Ashton AMA situation before condemning him.

For a long time now, AMAs undertaken by prominent people have often been with the assistance of others—usually stated as such in the original post. This was the case with Ashton's own AMA, where it was stated his campaign team would be helping with responses. With this in mind, I find it a lot less egregious on Rob's own part than some here have framed. For all we know he simply assumed his team would have the better judgment of not using an LLM to format or write answers instead of explicitly telling them, "don't use AI."

It was certainly an oversight and, to be sure, a costly lesson, but I think it's reasonable to point-out the overly dramatic responses I'm seeing from some people should probably be re-considered before full condemnation of the man. Rob Ashton can be a huge boon to the NDP given his background and union experience, and puritanism I don't think serves the party well, as we've historically seen with disagreements between those of various left-leaning ideas.
