Do i need to defeat Morgott before Rykard? Im confused

Ive watched a heap of videos but i just cant get my head around it, some videos say i need to defeat morgott first to access a snowy area and some say i should defeat defeat Rykard before Morgott???? even tho you cant finish his quest????
