Swapped to Heat Pump but No Permits
Hello,
Quick summary: had a certified pro put in heat pump in my house by taking out my oil burner in the house. Realized permits weren’t pulled. Local electric company approved install and inspected. Worried about my strict town now several years later. Could they make me pull out my heating system?
We bought a house and within the first year the oil furnace started leaking. Not oil just the water inside of it. So we couldn’t heat our house above 58 without leaking, so we bought a bunch of space heaters so replacing it was an emergency. Got quotes and where we live the cost to fix it didn’t make sense since it was 25 years old the furnace and it was 23k to replace it. A relative suggested an air supply heat pump. He owns an hvac company and he went through the whole state certification process to be able to install them for our house.
In order to do this we had to take out the oil tank and all its parts then replace it with the new machinery. We were in contact with the local electric company every step of the way of the process. He sent them sketches and pictures and they even came to inspect it and approve it.
We realized that we never actually told the town since I honestly thought the electric company would have handled that since they were the ones approving the install. Yes I was very wrong. We have a very strict town in terms of the inspector. I want to now finish my basement and get permits to do it right but they would notice I have a giant air handler in my basement now. So am thinking I’d get an after the fact permit on the heat pump but I’m wondering if there is any chance they’d make me remove the heat pump like they would an illegal basement? The basement is still unfinished at the moment so everything is exposed for them to check but I’m just nervous that this will be a big problem now.
Any thoughts?
