Invisibility
Invisibility:
We’ve all chosen it as a superpower at some point.
Mine must have come true.
Or maybe I learned it early—
curled up in the womb.
Let me tell you what it’s really like to be invisible.
I can stand in a room full of people
and feel no different than a coat on a chair,
or an untouched glass of water.
Sometimes it steals my voice, too.
I try to speak,
But my words dissolve
somewhere between my lips
and ears that were never turned toward me.
I’ve laughed at jokes no one noticed I understood,
answered questions no one asked me.
And when I leave, no one searches for me.
But invisibility is exhausting,
especially when you get stuck in it.
Because after a while,
you stop checking mirrors,
and forget the sound of your own name.
So take it from me—
Don’t choose invisibility.
