Taking or not taking insurance

Discussion Thread :redditgold:

There are so many different stances out there, and I know that taking insurance is a hassle and complication and mess. What I'm interested in is hearing opinions on the ethics of taking insurance/not in terms of making therapy an accessible form of healthcare.

I hear a lot of arguments not to take insurance because it compromises client confidentiality and you lose control over length of treatment and things like that. Yet, who am I to decide that for a client? Isn't that up to them? And everyone does this with medical care and accepts the downsides, and typically don't prefer to use doctors who don't take insurance. So anyway, that argument is confusing to me. I hear most clients and prospective clients express that they wish they could use in-network services.

Curious about arguments along these lines for/against taking insurance. Thanks!
