how to crochet the deer eyes?

I'm trying to crochet this fawn for my daughter, but the instructions don't include steps for making the eyes. I tried to replicate them myself, but I'm not experienced enough to figure it out. Could someone please shed some light on how to do the eyes?

I attached my work in progress. I'm about to give up and put it away :-). Besides the wrong shape, I notice my intarsia work shows a lot of the color change pattern. :-(
