Account Manager to BDR?

Sales Careers

I’ve been an AM at a Fortune 500 company selling industrial printers at manufacturing facilities. Some benefits of working here are that it’s remote, company car, and managing my own schedule. My base salary is $90k plus commission. The commission structure is a bit annoying where we have to meet 76% of our quote before we get paid commission. Also, a sale is not recognized until it’s shipped. Commission is about 2% of our quota. In 2025, I was unable to get paid commission because most of the projects were on hold, and in December, I closed an $800k deal. My quota was $2.2M, and I finished at $2.0M. Even though I finished close to my quota, it sucked not getting recognized for any of my work. This is how the manufacturing industry is. I’ve been applying to new jobs, particularly in tech. I’m tired of driving around and having to deal with trying to get into a manufacturing facility where there’s content turnover. I applied for a BDR role in tech that has a similar base salary, and I’m thinking of going that route and moving up internationally. Has anyone ne been through this or would recommend it? Another option is me changing careers and possibly going to law enforcement.
