Opinions on Mossadegh

Discussion | گفتگو

Hello. I am an American Jew in the Iranian diaspora, and am wondering your opinion of the Prime Minister Mossadegh from 1951-1953.

I completely abhor the regime, and understand that the Shah's rule is incredibly better than what the regime is. However, I'm researching for a school project and have learned information that has further challenged my views on Iran before 1979. I learned more about the brutality of SAVAK and Mossadegh's reasons for his nationalisation. Of course, Mossadegh wasn't all perfect, and he did make a lot of mistakes, but I think he was a genuine man who wanted the best for his country. Also, the CIA and MI6, in my opinion, acted out of paranoia, and the British exploited American fears about communism to convince them to join the coup.

Also, in my opinion, the 1953 coup doesn't justify people bringing it up all the time whenever someone says something bad about the regime. Today, the circumstances are pretty different, and I think, or at least, would like to believe, that the west would not repeat their mistake in Iran with another 1953-like intervention.

I understand if people disagree with the opinion I have come to, just please remain respectful. Conflicts can be a lot more nuanced than we like to think.
