Interior doors, pre-hung is the way to go in most cases right?
I used to have this notion that if I were to ever do my own doors, I could save a bunch of money buying the door slabs, getting my own hinges, doing the hinge templates, the custom door jams. But as I look at prices on Home Depot, I'm not so sure.
I just want a basic door, almost something you'd find in any modern builder grade home. Solid core, simple panes. That alone is an upgrade over what we have (old, totally flat, hollow core, too many thick coats of paint, painted over hinges).
It's time to do the doors. New doors, new casing around them. Basic prehung in a style that looks acceptable, maybe $320 CAD. Basic panel door in same style, maybe $200 CAD (30-32", solid core, 4-6 pane, nothing fancy).
I guess that's $120 and of that savings, I'd have to buy my own jam material and hinges, and drill the door handles.
I guess if you buy in bulk maybe you can get the jam material and hinges down to maybe 30 bucks per door meaning your at $90 savings for the labor? I guess if you do doors like a production shop (hinge routing, drilling doors, cutting and installing jams level, then hanging door), maybe that 80-100 bucks CAD is worth it.
Prehung seems simpler for sure. I have 8 doors to do so I'd be paying close to an extra $1000 for the doors being prehung, but it just seems worth it I think. If you've ever installed doors, is prehung the way to go, or is it worth it to take a little extra time per door and save that money and put it toward something else?
