What do portal visits look like now with NIL?

Discussion

Several years back in the pre-NIL days I had the chance to tag along with a buddy and his son on a recruiting visit, and it’s something I still think about when people talk about the portal + NIL era. His son was a 6'10" high school basketball phenom being recruited by several schools, one of which was Iowa. We spent the day meeting with Fran McCaffery, his wife, and some of the assistants, toured the weight room and practice facilities, and since it was a Saturday we even got to hang in Fran’s suite at the Iowa football game (can’t even remember who they were playing). Lots of talk about “we’re a family here” which is probably why Mrs. McCaffery was part of the pitch. She even brought over a homemade casserole for lunch. What struck me afterward was what wasn’t part of the visit. Very different from what campus tours are like with regular non-athlete students. Other than the Fran suite at the football game, it was all basketball, no real tour of campus, nothing about the broader university experience, no dorms, no dining facilities, no “This is what Iowa is all about” angle.

Watching all these transfer notifications got me wondering how much recruiting visits have changed now in the NIL era. Money obviously talks, and development and playing time matter a ton. Are visits essentially transactional business meetings now, where it’s mostly about compensation, role, and playing time? Or is there still a real effort to dazzle guys with facilities, tradition, trophies, culture, campus life, etc.? Does the university itself even matter anymore in the pitch, or is it mostly just the backdrop?

Curious what people here have heard or read, especially from anyone close to the process.
