Questions on basing chaos

Ive never based before and i'd love some suggestions for materials or technical paints if you don't mind. It's a Vashtor lead army of mainly Deamon Engines and some cultist mobs. I'm thinking of something reminiscent of a shattered street or city with coppery or metallic debris. Any tips? And thank you.
