25 years ago, the world witnessed the greatest rookie of all time, Ryo Miyuki

Yeah the title is a joke

But before, some context.

January 2001 was NOT a good period for wrestling fans that are not WWE fans or NOAH fans. AJPW is basically a shell of its former self, NJPW is starting their decline, WCW witnessed...well, WCW Sin, and the joshi wrestling is falling apart. In this context, I'd like to introduce you to...Ryo Miyuki. Well, if you hadn't heard of her, that's pretty normal...she barely lasted a month in ARSION, yet cemented herself as a legend of the joshi scene...for all the reasons you don't want to be a legend. This is the story of a Rossy Ogawa rookie that probably ended ARSION by herself.

#1: Before wrestling

Ryo Miyuki (her real name Miyuki Maeda), was born in 1980 near Tokyo. Wrestling wasn't her childhood passion, instead playing volleyball during her school years. She'd discover wrestling in October 1999 (idk why's that specific), when she watched a handicap match between the legendary Aja Kong and the insane tag team known as LCO. These three wrestlers were wrestling at that time in a company called...ahem...Hyper Visual Fighting Arsion (that's their name, like you see with Stardom and Marigold rn), and, to the surprise of no one, this is the owner of this company is none other than this motherfucker right here

https://preview.redd.it/hfn2md5h4hdg1.png?width=284&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a89ae6c9ccc7758ed740c8735cb9b0dc6ce4e50

Ok so...a bit of context about him: well, joshi during the 80s/90s were led by the famous Matsunaga bloodline, owners of AJW (or Zenjo) from its foundation in 1968 till it's dissolution in 2005, and their image of wrestling, alongside their long-standing partnership with Fuji TV was simple: grit, violence, hardwork and blood. I mean, watch a AJW match back then and it was violent. And their target audience was...school girls

^(Yea, if you're wanting an equivalent, it's like basically Paul Heyman running ECW with the same violence it had, the same insanity it had, with Bubba Ray running wild on the mic and Mick Foley being Mick Foley...and the target audience was highschoolers)

And this formula, alongside the use of music with the Crush Gals (like WWF did with Hulk Hogan and Cyndi Lauper) worked for decades, with major booms in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, with names such as Chigusa Nagayo, Lioness Asuka, Devil Masami, Dump Matsumoto, Aja Kong, Bull Nakano, Akira Hokuto, Shinobu Kandori, and many names I forget along the way. Arenas were usually packed with families, people of all ages, and audiences were hitting levels only the WWF, NJPW and AJPW at that time we're reaching. They were that popular...until 1997.

At that period, AJW lost their Fuji TV deal and, along many existing problems in that formula, led to many promotions seeing the day, such as JWP, LLPW, GAEA, NEO, and, of course, ARSION, which would form this period where joshi wrestling was all over the place. And as the owner of ARSION, Rossy Ogawa had this new vision of how joshi wrestling should be, and if Stardom was his golden goose, ARSION was his first major flop, due to the fact that his vision...was VERY different, to say the least.

Rossy's evolution in the scene was gradual, as he slowly but surely grabbed more and more power. If on the surface, and what Meltzer says about how legendary he is and how revolutionary his booking is and how good wrestling in his companies are, seems true, if you dig a bit down the dirt, and you'll question yourself how the hell did we let this guy have power.

To make it short, Rossy was, in the 80s, a wrestling fan who managed to get a role as a manager (kinda) and the one who travels the Crush Gals (Lionness Asuka and Chigusa Nagayo) into the arenas AJW booked, and by that time period between the 80s golden era and the 90s silver era, he'd gradual gain power to be on the board of directors of AJW to push his vision of wrestling. And if you want his vision, here's how it was in short:

focus on sex appeal, market to the middle aged men who have disposable income (and are probably single) instead of families, and random matches and Inshallah in terms of wrestling. And once AJW fell apart in 1997, Rossy Ogawa decided to run away and form his own promotion based on his ideas: ARSION.

And to bring some legitimacy to his ideas, he brought in Aja Kong and some tough SOG to fill in like LCO, Ayako Hamada, Mariko Yoshida, etc. And to preserve this legitimacy, he gave the booking role to Aja Kong, while Rossy takes care of the marketing and appeal. And this is how the mess that is ARSION came to be, and how it was easy for newbies like Ryo Miyuki to come in, because, besides being a very beautiful woman by Japanese conventions and was athletic, she was tall, VERY TALL; she was 176 cm. In comparison, Jamie Hayter is 173 cm, Kris Statlander 175 cm, and Charlotte Flair 178 cm. We're talking this tall. But, here's the deal about Ryo Miyuki

https://preview.redd.it/yq846f837hdg1.png?width=1007&format=png&auto=webp&s=8513e66e1de3a28db66efefd24caa9307f0b113b

Kris, Jamie and Charlotte are amazing in the ring and knew how to work a match and they have unimaginable natural talent. Ryo...well, besides being tall, athletic and beautiful, her talent is the equivalent of Ali Dia in Southampton, but Rossy doesn't care, look at her, she's tall, she does volleyball, she's a wonderful youngster, and Rossy did what he thought was best for the business: strap a rocket into Ryo's back and shoot her to the moon: he promoted her as a SUPERROOKIE who's gonna carry ARSION for the next 10 years...only Brock Lesnar got that level of push and, unlike Ryo, was a freak of nature. And to emphasise that she's a SUPERROOKIE, Rossy decided to...photoshoot her in swimming bikinis...best way to promote a youngster instead of the boring powerbombs into poor Spike Dudley...

And to make things worse, he decided to have her debut match not against another rookie for 5 minutes, not a veteran who can help her to work, oh no. HE LITERALLY PUT HER WITH AJA KONG VS LCO IN THE MAIN EVENT OF THEIR SHOW. I'm not kidding, and these 3 weren't your typical modern joshis, nah nah, they were tough, they were stiff and had a megapush the year prior which is basically career-suicide for Ryo Miyuki before it even started. But maybe I'm wrong, so let's find out

Debut Match: January 5th, 2001, LCO vs Aja Kong and Ryo Miyuki

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJcVUSx0FC4&t (at around 1:45 min)

Another thing to say: yeah, most ARSION matches are mostly clipped, even in their VHS/DVD sales, because...why not? Anyways, where were we? Ryo Miyuki's debut match.

The match highlights mostly showed her selling for LCO and getting busted open (this article gets more in detail), so it's a very flawed idea to rate her for this match (and only the highlights shown because it makes a flawed idea of who Ryo Miyuki is.
But, if you're a WWE fan mostly, you can tell it's a very bad idea to put a rookie with no experience to have her very first match with 3 main eventers and letting her get busted open on a major show. Cena, in his 2002 debut, had already 3 years of experience in UPW and OVW. Lesnar that same year went through OVW as well. The closest you can get to a pure rookie are probably the Tough Enough winners such as Miz and Maven, and even they went through a lot of work to be even on the card, and all of them went through deserving hard work and a bit of luck to be at the top.
Ryo had 0 matches to her credit, got barely trained and she got shoved to the main event with 3 generational stars of their own right. Rossy, that's not a superrookie, that's a disaster waiting to happen. Which eventually, after a some matches, happened...

2nd match: January 27th, 2001, LCO and Michiko Omukai vs Aja Kong, Ryo Miyuki and Mariko Yoshida

Warning: what will be talked about next can cause you quitting wrestling for good, so to prevent this happening, here's the best match of 2001 to relief your worries

https://preview.redd.it/f3s2w9dqcjdg1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=64c3f53aa564b8573f1c676102ae37c2dd3cc847

(The Video is hard to find, but it's on a VK, and I don't want to risk myself whilst sharing the video, so I'll use snapshots to show you what a disaster it was)

After 4 matches in ARSION (and a 2 week break) that unfortunately I couldn't find them (hopefully someone can), Ryo was put into the test again, this time alongside Mariko and Aja to compete against LCO and Michiko Omukai. Again, 5 decent-to-great wrestlers in their own regard, but this time, Ryo has to show what she's capable of.After some decent exchanges between Aja and Michiko (and Aja selling Michiko's punch like Michiko is Big Show for some reason), Aja tags Ryo in to beat up Omukai, and after some time struggling to lift Omukai, she did this...

https://preview.redd.it/q7hdq0f58jdg1.png?width=1450&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8a1f7017350c480b62cd133fe0cf992e4fd3d5c

Yes...you saw a wrestler miss a worked punch by at least a mile. Ryo does another (weak) uraken, and Michiko clearly has none of it and just basically slaps her. And this is where it basically all falls apart

https://preview.redd.it/7cuy7ndh8jdg1.png?width=1448&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9eb1f6291c9f092818b94a7bae882addd4074a9

After some seconds, Ryo decides to runs the ropes and hit Michiko with her "finisher", which was countered by Omukai, who clearly looks pissed

https://preview.redd.it/a13gxdhs8jdg1.png?width=1436&format=png&auto=webp&s=8aa81b7b095fc84526c579c706bc48adba73718d

Yes, that's Ryo's finisher, a Flying Heel Kick that she only managed to reach her thigh, and oh dear, it's only the beginning of the clipped match, because the other wrestlers decided instead of just wrestling, they decided to all coast, and all hell broke loose. I'll let the pictures tell the whole story

These entire snapshots happened in the snap of...two minutes. Botches happened as frequently as Cena changing the color of his T-shirts back in the day, and exposed the business more than Morasca ever did in 7 minutes. And this was only the clipped highlights. The entire match was 20 minutes. TWENTY. MINUTES. I wonder what's worse than this segment that even made Jenna Morasca look like the second coming of Mitsuharu Misawa! Imagine witnessing a match where 5 experienced wrestlers got dragged down to a green wrestler's level and started botching everywhere

Like, I'm pretty sure Ryo doesn't have the talent to be a wrestler, and barely the charisma to be a top star, but Rossy should've known better not to basically strap the rocket to a rookie and give her a megapush. But it's Rossy Ogawa (oh and btw, he was meddling with the booking, which led to Aja Kong feuding with him and basically the incident of February 12th, 2001)

"Third" Match: 3rd Anniversary Show, February 12th, 2001

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H5aNklSp-Y&list=PPSV

This event is basically ARSION's Brawl Out and needs an entire post for it alone, so I'll be only focusing on Omukai vs Miyuki.

https://preview.redd.it/wybzy5h9hjdg1.png?width=635&format=png&auto=webp&s=a09d38ad8bd5d20232b9529990a45114e2aafcec

After the disasterclass of January 27th, and considering she was Aja Kong's protégé, Ryo Miyuki no-showed the rest of the shows up until February 12th for unspecified reasons (but probably related to what's going on), Rossy booked Ryo's "farewell" match to be a worked shoot vs Michiko Omukai, where Ryo would lose after she tried two bad Flying Heel Kick and two weak Urakuens, with Michiko replying with a weak Urakuen by herself and Ryo flopping dead to the floor in the space of a minute. After that, Ryo shot her shoot and told the arena that she's quitting ARSION but not wrestling, before leaving the arena and ARSION for good. And for two months, it seems like Ryo Miyuki did in fact quit wrestling, until...

Fourth Match: GAEA, Limit Break, April 29th 2001

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lxB577SUhg (last 5 minutes)

Yea, she came back, but this time, it was an opener vs the veteran Chigusa Nagayo. By 2001, Chigusa was already past her prime and rusting down, so this match, in theory, should be an okay but sloppy match. Instead, we got a 2 minute galore that exposed that Ryo was just...talentless and not fit to wrestle, even with Chigusa's best efforts. Chigusa did the flying heel kick correctly 3 times on Ryo, and Ryo couldn't land it ONCE. It's embarrassing, really embarrassing. And after this disasterclass, Ryo never touched the limelight again, but returned to wrestling anyways, this time with DDT

DDT, from 2001 till 2003

This part only has some photos, but so far, so videos about it, so everything about it will be taken with a grain of salt

https://preview.redd.it/esi2nqhxijdg1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7891187c5dce57364884f876699138983b39b8e

Yup, the girl's back, this time, for a good amount of time. No footage of her wrestling could be fetched so far, so I can't really evaluate her progress, but she did seem to have had a decent career in DDT, with winning the DDT IronMetal Heavyweight Championship for an hour in 2002, which is one hour of championship more than MATT HARDY in 2002 in comparison. Besides that, she got regular milage in 2002 and 2003, with matches alongside Sanshiro Takagi, GENTARO, and future Stardom veteran Kaori Yoneyama/Fukigen Death in 2003 where, although DDT was still a small indie company, she managed to get some decent experience and time, especially in tag teams.
Unfortunately, this is where it ends for her, as per her Japanese Wikipedia page, she was wrestling through a lumbar hernia and broken vertebrae since her ARSION days, which led to her retirement in November 2003. It has been said that Aja Kong, her mentor, gave her her glove as a sign of respect. After that, she briefly managed Ai Fujita in 2004 before leaving the wrestling scene for good.

To conclude

https://preview.redd.it/jatxmz86mjdg1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ef7b8e499bfea5672427f7b196c4f6583add4db

With as career as long as Brock Lesnar's first run, Ryo Miyuki definitely left her mark on joshi wrestling, and NOT IN A GOOD WAY. But also, we have to remind ourselves that she got herself in a place where she got a push out of her control by a man who focused more on looks than wrestling, got embroiled into a big drama in ARSION (which led to the company falling apart), and suffered through a nasty injury which led to her short career ending.

Has she been fucked by the drama in ARSION, in circumstances that were out of her control? YES
Did she deserve to be in the main event of ARSION, even if Rossy wanted to push her to the moon? NO
Does she have talent? Probably not
Is she a candidate for the worst wrestler we've ever seen? DEFINITELY

So yeah, here's the story of a rookie who had no talent yet got pushed by a man who preferred being a mark and loved more the looks than the wrestling, got embroiled herself into drama, exposed herself thrice as talentless, and became a legend in joshi wrestling for all the wrong reasons
