Fixing budgie care

Advice

Budgie is currently kept in a cage that’s “big enough” but vertical and just *not* big enough in reality for a bird that doesn’t currently get free range time. I’ve ordered one, obviously it’s shipped by land but will be big enough (plenty so) by the time it arrives I’ll have hopefully tamed him down a bit (I think it’s a he.. but I’m worried about getting the sex right) and have him used to new style of perches

I’ve taken out mirrors, bells, any cotton toys and wire, any chocking/strangulation hazards. Made some temporary perches with untreated and clean branches from outside (otherwise he’d have no perches)

I’ve ordered some new food, some pellets since all he gets is a millet mix right now. I also need to make some chop for him so his diet can be more balanced.

Bathing is tough because he’s not tamed but I’ve put in a bath and he seems to use it when I’m not there so I’ve been cleaning it out each day, all water gets refreshed + cleaned each day.

I bought an air purifier because both my parents vape and we have open fires (old house with no central heating)

I also bought a cage heater (bird safe one) to try and discourage him from sleeping in a tent that could be a nest since I’ve noticed some hormonal signs and I know he gets cold at night.

Some natural foraging toys and I diy-ed a bird safe swing to keep him entertained in the short term.

I handle him 3-4 times a day with millet and try and get him to nibble, he’s been less shy and doesn’t fly away as much now. And I’ve noticed an improvement for the 3 days I’ve been changing things.

I’m also considering getting him a mineral block, he’s currently has cuttlefish which isn’t the best anyway but I may just get a mineral block … now I’m thinking about it I’m 90% sure he already has one in his cage. Any recommendations for blocks?

I’m somehow not broke, despite having 3 cats, 2 dogs and 6 horses?? So budgie will be a nice addition, my mum picked him up 2-3 years ago with a sibling but that sibling passed. I’m not sure why but trying to learn the possible reasons. Now budgie has sat neglected next to my parents luxurious parrot room for their very loud macaws. I had no idea budgies were so complex and smart. He’s even started to kiss and say hello back to me.. which warms my autistic heart

Please give friendly advice, I’m a tad nervous about posting this. I’ve also been spending 90% of my time researching things that are bird safe, medical research on budgies, wellness signs, pleaseee any advice or websites are super appreciated
