is it weird to approach girls?

I have seen a lot of people talking about how guys never approach girls and how girls wish that guys would approach them, but I would feel weird and like a creep if I did it because I am probably around average or below average looking, and I don't really have the confidence to. so basically, do you guys like it, or is it acctually weird to approace a girl and ask for her number or whatever?

also, bonus question, do you guys acctually fall head over heels for a guy who smells good? it seems like I keep getting adds for colognes that make girls want you, and I also saw a girl talking about how she loves when a guy smells good. so is this acctually true or is it way blown out of proportion?
