Chapter 1 Eleanor’s POV “Bye, Library Virgin!”Winter break was two hours away when the usual chorus of boys at the back of the lecture hall decided to serenade me one last time. I didn’t even flinch anymore. Let them have their little joke. They could scream it from the rooftops and it still wouldn’t change the fact that I’d smoked every single one of them on the last calculus exam. But I have to say, this nickname still pierced the softest part of my heart, like a fine needle. Yes, I’ve never been to bed with anyone. But the reason was never the “no one wants me” excuse they imagined. But ever since I was sixteen, I’ve kept the word “first” reserved for just one person. Noah Knight. My stepfather. And I was finally going to see him again. On the drive back to Atherton, I rolled down the window a bit, letting the cold December wind slap my face, forcing myself to stay awake. But my mind kept uncontrollably replaying that day. It was the first time he walked into our cramped old apartment in Palo Alto. He was wearing a charcoal grey cashmere coat, his shoulders sharp and squared, his jawline clean and precise, like it had been measured with a ruler. At the same time, he hold my mom’s two 30‑inch suitcases with his hands, like they were filled with feathers. He looked at me for half a second, nodded, and said my name in the most effortless, calm voice. “You must be Eleanor…” My breath stopped. I was sixteen. Braces. Frizzy hair. An MIT hoodie three sizes too big. I looked like a bundled up marshmallow next to a man who might as well have been a Greek god. “Hi,” I tried to say, but it came out as a squeak. My hands fumbled at my sleeves. My knees wobbled hard enough that I had to grab the doorframe. From that moment on, my life never recovered. Since he married my Mom, he had always been kind to me. Full of patient smiles and hearty laughs. He chatted with me late at night when I pretended I couldn’t sleep. However, what he didn’t know was that I felt something entirely different for him. But he was my stepfather, a forbidden presence to me. So I endured it all. Fortunately, a year later, my mom announced she was going to Paris to “find herself,” though really it was just about finding her next husband. She asked if I wanted to go with her, and I barely hesitated before saying no. I was tired of moving every time she got bored of her life. And Noah… well, he didn’t say anything, he just looked at me, and in that moment, I knew he didn’t want me to leave either. At that time, I thought this was my chance. So after my mom left, I confessed to him without hesitation. But he gently patted my head and told me I didn’t have to do that to survive. Even without my mom, I could stay here. I would always be his precious daughter. Looking at the way he gazed at me, my chest began to tighten. I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Three hours of driving later, I finally reached Noah’s fibreglass mansion in Atherton. It stood above the street with smooth glass walls and pale stone panels that caught the afternoon light. He was already at the door the moment I stepped out of the car. The second I saw him, I dropped my suitcase right there on the driveway and ran straight to him. He opened his arms without hesitation, catching me the same way he always did. His body was warm against mine, with his familiar scent. I felt my nipples harden instantly, shamefully fast. My breath quicken, and I prayed he didn’t notice. He kissed my forehead softly. “There you are,” he murmured. “My little glasses. You’ve grown up.” I puffed out my cheeks. “Hey, don’t call me that anymore.” I hated that nickname. Ever since he first used it, I switched to contacts anytime I knew he would be around although he always said I looked cute in glasses. But before he could speak again, another man’s deep voice sounded behind us. “How long are you two planning to keep hugging out here?” I was startled, not expecting there to be anyone else here. I stepped out of Noah’s arms and looked toward the steps curiously. Then I realized the man speaking looked exactly like Noah. Same jawline, same mouth, and same dark eyes. My eyes widened. “That is Nolan,” Noah smiled. “My twin. He’ll be staying with us.” I tried to compose myself and stuttered out a greeting. “H-hi. I’m Eleanor.” Nolan closed the distance in three long strides and pulled me into a tight hug. “Nice to meet you, niece,” he said into my ear. My knees wobbled. Nolan smelled exactly like Noah, warm and clean with a touch of spice. That familiar scent on someone else suddenly lit a fire between my thighs. I hated how fast my body responded, just like I was disloyal to Noah. I pulled away as soon as I could, trying to hide my face behind my hair. I could still feel the imprint of his chest on mine. “That was… nice to meet you, too,” I managed. But in my mind, I told myself that the person I like is Noah, so stay away from Nolan. Do not let this get complicated
