Albina is probably one of the most underrated characters in Canto IX and I think she has a lot more depth and nuance to her than we have thought.
I have see a lot of people who consider Albina to be the least developed character in the House of Spiders, the "token bad apple" among the apprentices, the only one who actually deserved the death she got, the one that's only popular because of her looks, and so on.

However, after I've looked into her character and lines, I'll have to disagree. Not only is she not any less tragic than the other apprentices, but I'd go a step further and say that her, alongside Lucio, are the only two among them that can be considered satisfying and finished products as characters. Her writing is just a lot more subtle compared to the others, and not directly revealed her passives.
Her attachment to Fascia is probably the most defining trait about her character. She doesn't just value Fascia as her best artwork, like Callisto does with Tibia, She treats it as her closest friend, never really stops talking to it in and out of combat.
I genuinely don't think she's a bad person at the core.
While initally it might just seems a weird quirk, It actually says a lot about just how lonely she truly was. Her whole interaction with the LCB shows that she has absolutely zero idea what "friendship" is actually supposed to be until Sora told her, and even then she misinterprets it as something about sharing their flesh with each other, because that's the only thing she really knows about doing. She is absolutely eager to be friends with the LCB and that's literally the first thing she does after greeting them, even though her methods of doing it is... questionable.
We never really get much of a hint of Albina's past and how she met Callisto, but she's probably never had any friends in her life, to the point that the only thing she can really be attached to and talk to is her flesh sword forged from her own body. She's basically a shut-in with little experience of communicating with other people.
"What about Callisto then? is he not her caretaker?" you may ask. Once we put together both Albina's behavior and Callisto's, an ugly picture begin to surface.
He too, is very lonely, as an exile of the Ring, the thing he wanted the most is for someone to genuinely critique his art, which the other Nursefathers are either disgusted by or uninterested in.
This line from Hohenheim is what resonated with him the most.
He's absolutely ecstatic whenever someone offers comment and criticism for him, Even when Sinclair called his art "trashy", he accepts it and dies satisfied. For him, Art is something that needs to be commented on. Art is nothing without an audience. He is literally incapable of creating art simply for art itself.
He wanted Yoshihide to impart her vision of his pieces, to grow up inspired by what he's doing, even if it means traumatizing her with gore from childhood until she's desensitized to it.
So what does it have to do with Albina? Well, out of all the apprentices and nursefathers, He's the only one whose relationship with Albina is strictly master and pupil, instead of being some sort of parental figure. Albina obviously respects him a lot, and he also cares about her a lot in a way, to the point that both of them uses Assist defense to take blows for each other during the fight. They are the only apprentice/nursefather pair who helps and synergizes with each other to such a degree.
She's also genuinely concerned when Callisto is hit with Hohenheim's hammer.
However, just like with Yoshihide, this also means that he won't be able to give any kind of parental affection to her. He only ever cares about art and thinks that "bonds and friendships" are pointless, and all of his education for Albina are for the sole purpose of making her into someone with the same tastes as him, to make her a good artist and critic so he can feel less lonely.
With all of this, it's no surprise that Albina ended up being so lonely that she had to look for affection in her own art piece.
In addition to that, just like her master, She only creates art for the sake of outside approval, in this case, from Callisto. She desperately wants to be acknowledged by him so at least he can give her a little bit of the kind of love she wants. It's sad that said praise is only really given after her death, and to her own corpse no less. Callisto cared about her, but not as a person.
Would she have been happy to hear it?
A big theme in Canto 9 is "becoming a copy", Rien was forced to become a cheap copy of Roland, Shiomi Yoru desperately wanted Yoshihide to not become just like her, and I think out of all the apprentices, Albina embodies this theme the best.
She's the only apprentice with the EXACT same panic type as her nursefather, once her armor comes off. The influence he has on her is far deeper than any other nursefather have to their apprentice. Callisto wanted someone to develop their own unique tastes so they can be a good critic and artist, but unknowingly, he ended up turning Albina into someone just as insane, creepy, and attention-seeking as himself.
Probably the worst part is how she ended up even feeding parts her brain to Fascia. She literally poured every single drop of her blood, everything in her body, to what she considered to be her friend. In Callisto's sprite, you can at very least see some flesh inside his chest cavity. Albina on the other hand, her brain is literally the only part of her that's left, and when there's no more to give, It had to go too. For her, love is giving, and Fascia is the one thing she would give everything for, even it's at her own expense. And it's even worse that Callisto just let her do it.
Albina is just so deep into Callisto's twisted teachings, that there was simply no way she could be saved other than dying.
She's so attached to Fascia to the point that she when it was destroyed, she straight up said that Sinclair could have just killed her. Instead of retreating like in 9-37, she just stood there, completely resigned to her fate, and let Sinclair cut her down without any resistance.
Despite all the jokes about Sinclair becoming his ultra clanker racist future self, I doubt he had any personal hatred when he did what he did. Fighting against clankers is his job, He was simply doing what had to be done. His speech was completely calm and harbored no malice. He immediately "forgave" Callisto for his "lack of perspective", but that did not stop him from finishing him off too. He also simply says "prosthese" instead of "filth" like Nclair.
The skill he used to finish off Albina is "Ultimate True Decapitation Deathblow", a single-hit skill used by the Night Drifter against Hong Lu to deliver a painless and instant death. As an experienced war veteran, He probably already knew what kind of person Albina is as he's seen way too many of them, and probably considered it to be a mercy kill to not prolong her suffering. He's called th "Green Deliverance" for a good reason.
I think that every apprentice is a victim of their circumstances and their Nursefather's education (other than Ren, he's fine), and Albina is no exception. She's been completely transformed into the insane monster she is right now, and even then, she's nothing but friendly to her victims. I don't believe that she is a bad person at her core. and I don't think Kira has killed any less number of people than her, and also mostly just for fun and the thrill of fighting, as implied by her ID and her skill names. Yet, she's still ultimately redeemable, as she is nowhere nearly as corrupted and rooted to someone's twisted values as Albina is.
Albina "deserved" her death not in the sense that it's a fitting punishment for what she's done. The other apprentices except Kira all had a chance to get a happy ending, which they rejected for various reasons. Lucio was unable to defy Valencina even when it was his time to do it, Sora walked into her death because she trusted the Prescripts until the end, and Ren decided to stay at his master's side at the cost of his own life. They could have been saved, but they didn't.
Albina on the other hand, is doomed from the beginning. Her tragedy is not the fact that she died, it's her entire life ever since she met Callisto.
I think she actually very talented too. Despite his high level, Callisto is certainly the weakest nursefather as his skillset is more suited in art and presentation instead of actual combat. Despite this, Albina was still able to develop her own fighting style with her Iron Maiden that allow her to reflect huge amount of damage, being very agile and acrobatic despite wearing it most of the time, while having a nuke skill that can rival Callisto's own. If she didn't lobotomize herself and studied under someone else, then her dream of becoming Maestro might not be a joke.
I don't think Canto IX has any single bad character. She fufills her role well as the most villainous of the Apprentices, struck down by Sinclair to show his character development, but she is also a compelling and entertaining character in her own right. KJH could just have made her a flat character that only looks cool, but that's obviously not what he did.
She could have definitely benefited from more screentime and passive descriptions, but even just right now, I think there's enough we know about her to make her super interesting. I do really hope we do eventually get her ID and she gets fleshed out more in the uptie story. Albina and Lucio are the only apprentices who have their character "completed" in a satisfying way and have unique death scenes that fit their circumstances.
I just feels really bad for her, and really hopes that in a certain world, she can live a happy life as a normal artist, preferrably free from the Ring's influences. She deserved better, just like Lucio, Kira, Sora and Ren. They were just innocent children, entangled in this web and unable to escape. I also hope that people can appreciate her character a bit more after this.
Rest in peace. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
