(NC) misdemeanor larceny at 18 w/ no pirors

Criminal Law

Location: NC

December 18th I was caught stealing $58 worth of goods from FYE in my local mall. I was given a citation with my court date and have been dying of anxiety since. I had turned 18 a week before the incident. I told the “arresting” (in quotes because I was never truly arrested) officer I’m unable to work due to chronic illness. I wanted to get Christmas gifts. I’d never been arrested or in trouble like this before. He was incredibly sympathetic and reassured me that if I told the judge what I told him I would be alright.

I can’t afford a lawyer even though I’ve started working (I can’t work more than a few days a week because of chronic illness) and am worried about receiving probation. Probation comes with drug tests and I have historically used marijuana to cope with my chronic pain and mental health. I’ve stopped smoking so I can past a drug test if it comes to that, but it’s taking a huge toll on me. Furthermore, I wouldn’t be able to smoke the whole duration of probation. I know it’s not the greatest of habits but it’s the only thing that’s made me capable of functioning with all my diagnoses.

Essentially, does anyone with more experience with this know what I should expect? What can I do to hopefully get community service? I’ve already started working again as previously mentioned, I have a GED equivalent since my chronic illness led to me dropping out of school. I’m attempting to acquire a photo ID since I’ve still yet to. What other ducks need to be in order?
