Pinchers / Bull Tapers for Stretching

Is using pinchers / bull tapers for septum stretching all that bad ? I've been pierced for almost a full year, and I decided to stretch my septum from a 16g horseshoe to a 14g bull taper ~4 days ago. There's no redness, swelling, or anything like that, just some slight irritation that I'm assuming is just me adjusting to the the new jewlery size. However, I come online to see a ton of people saying what I did wasn't right ? Will I blow out ? Should I downsize or switch jewlery ???
