Did we do too much for Hughes?

Whenever I’m rolling through player discussion its constantly how we signed X player because they were friends with Hughes. It’s almost as though we allowed Hughes to make selections on what this team should look like. In hindsight, it seems we acted in a place of weakness trying to appease someone who didn’t want to play in Canada. Was there too much focus on keeping him happy opposed to building a winning hockey team?
