The Rip (2026) Review

Netflix films generally are a hit and miss most of the time compared to their original library of shows. Oftentimes Netflix films suffer in quality, budget, and story resulting in them to suck due to cheap productions for cost cutting purposes and falsely advertised trailers that deliberately mislead spectators into wasting their time watching a mediocre or shitty straight to streaming film with all the good stuff gone or lacking in the actual film. Thankfully Director Joe Carnahan does not disappoint if you’re familiar with his extensive, fun, bonkers, action packed filmography from Narc, Smokin Aces, The Grey, and Boss Level then I can promise that you will not be disappointed at all in this latest action cat and mouse good cop bad cop narcotics thriller The Rip. Based on a true story The Rip stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Detective JD Byrne and Lieutenant Dane Dumars of the Miami Dade Police Department when of one their own is murdered (Captain Jackie Velez) uncovering a narco conspiracy between crooked cops and the cartel suspicion of the killer or killers falls into the lap of JD Byrne and Lieutenant Dane Dumars Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT). The Tactical Narcotics Team specializes in robbing stash houses that contain various types of drugs, weapons and money and this time another big score is set to go down in the strangely quiet neighborhood of Hialeah $20 Million in cash or is it $100 Million? $150 Million? Something is not adding up as (TNT) and JD Byrne and Dane Dumars are in for one hell of a fucking night not just surviving being marked for death but surviving each others company and figuring out who is being truthful and who is lying? It is crooked cops meets Reservoir Dogs, that is how to best describe this film after viewing it tonight it is a botched drug seizure gone wrong in a hell basket! I loved the characters in this film and their backstories and triumphs and tribulations as people, not just defectives or cops 24/7 all day all night. It was refreshing to analyze and reflect upon this as I was watching the film it definitely took me for a ride as I was guessing trying to figure out who was the rat or patsy and I obviously put all of the pieces together but for a bit at first I thought it was this person due to X, Y, and Z circumstances but it actually wasn’t. It was great to have an action thriller that made you think and second guess yourself rather than relying on guns blazing (Although that’s fun and awesome too come on). The action sequences are A FUCKING BLAST! Guns firing at the speed of sound and might in Dolby Atmos as well as cars riffing, crashing, burning, and exploding is like experiencing and witnessing Carmen for the first time in your life. A beauty to one’s ears. No Spoilers but I really loved this film 100% I was not bored or let down at all! The rhythm and pacing and tension were utilized to their advantage at the right times at the right moments at the right beats nothing fell flat or dull whatsoever. I loved The Rip! Is this a new story that will revolutionize action films or police procedural thrillers? NO! This has been done before and it totally pays a homage to those other films of yesteryear but if you’re a fan of Joe Carnahan or Ben Affleck and Matt Damon both as actors and filmmakers you’ll definitely love what’s in store in The Rip. I highly recommend it if you want a new action thriller film that’s actually good and doesn’t suck or disappoint spectators!
