Kenmore 158 Collect them all!
I was going to Wallyworld to get a spool of denim thread since my other spool is the wrong shade of denim (faded??) and stopped in the Goodwill across the street, which IMHO prices their machines at about twice what my local store prices them at. Anyhoo, spot a pair of plastic crappo machines in the housewares aisle, but in the next aisle over I spot what I am guessing is a singer 15 clone, labeled "Deluxe Family Sewing Machine," for $30. I play with it, very stiff, and eventually get it moving a bit but the thread arm only can manage a back and forth, perhaps 80% of the cycle before freezing. So I take it back to the shelf and this time see a plastic Kenmore Case also on the shelf (beige, not white) so I pull it out and it is a 158.16031 Do a quick Google on phone and take it to a table, where I pop the gear cover to expose the thick chunk of beeswax. Rotate handwheel and every thing moves smoothly. Take to wall, plug in, power on, press pedal, motor whirrs and nothing else moves. Can't sort handwheel, so google more, and it has a push button clutch which sometimes freezes. I pop cover, sort that out, machine comes to life. With top off run through cam stack, dogs, reverse, etc, all checks out, so it leaves with me for $60, but really really clean and a very nice original case. It does have super high shank, and the extra high lift setting goes really high. Craft room looks booked for tomorrow but may drag machine down if only to degrease. Sometimes the people who reserve the room are no-shows too. So now have (3) 158 in the stable. This one has the 2 belt gear reduction and 1.2A motor so curious about punching power. The pedal is also smoother than the one currently on the 1780.
As I was bussing with machine now, never did get the thread. This the 7th machine in a little over a year ($260 spent, total), and I already passed on a white 499 and a Pfaff 1222e (no pedal). Still looking for a 201, and have expanded the search circle into the furniture area.
